Burglary Alert - What you can do.
Friday, 16 April 2010

The following is a Public Service Announcement from the Remerton Police Department:

Citizens and Visitors of Remerton,

Recently we have had a substantial increase in home burglaries and theft of items from vehicles.  In regard to the thefts from vehicles, the thieves are going through parking lots, driveways, and other areas pulling on door handles looking for easy targets.  They are specifically looking in vehicles for Apple products such as IPods, IPhones, ITouch, etc.  Many of these vehicles have been actually broken into if found locked.  Please do not leave these items in your vehicle for any length of time!

In regard to the home burglaries, the thieves are targeting Playstations, Nintendo Wii Systems, and Flat Screen TV’s mainly, but have taken other items of opportunity.  Do not leave your blinds and curtains open at night with your TV visible.  We suspect they are driving or walking by and selecting homes to target later when they suspect no one is home.  They are knocking on the front door to assure no one is inside.  Some have kicked the front and back doors to gain entry, while others check for unlatched windows.  We suspect that when they target the larger items, they are traveling in vehicles.  In one instance, a driver dropped two thieves off at the target location and he/she parked the vehicle nearby.  When the items were gathered, they called the driver with cheap small “walkie talkies” for the pick up.  These types of burglaries are occurring more during the daytime hours when thieves suspect no one is home.

We are asking for your help in protecting you and your property.  Please copy all of your serial numbers for expensive items down, take photo’s if possible and place this information in a safe place.  This will help us when we come in contact with the item later in a pawn shop or someone is in possession of it.

Please also be patient with us as we will be stepping up our patrols and interviewing people coming and going in Remerton.  We are taking extra steps to protect you and your property.

Report any suspicious activity to police.  If you have a tip about where we can find stolen items call (229) 247-2320.  You can leave a message at the police department and remain anonymous.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Remerton Police Department

Remerton City Council Regular Session - April 12, 2010 - Outcome
Monday, 12 April 2010

CITY OF REMERTON - REGULAR MEETING
MONDAY, APRIL 12, 2010 at 5:30 P.M.

Welcome Guests.
Pledge and Prayer.
Establish Quorum of Council-Present were Council persons Sherry Wood, Ryan Gordon and Bill Wetherington.  Reggie Stacks was absent and there is a vacant seat.  City Administrator Jack Byrd and City Attorney Brad Folsom were present.

Approval of minutes from Regular meeting March 8, 2010.
Approval of minutes from Special Called meeting March 22, 2010.
Approval of minutes from Special Called meeting March 31, 2010. - These three sets of minutes were unanimously approved  approved without modification in a single motion.

Citizens to be Heard-None (during this section)

New Business:
1. Financial Report-Lisa Mashburn, City Clerk-
2. Consideration regarding CD renewal at First State Bank in the amount of $21,139.76-Unanimously approved.

Old Business:
1. Consideration regarding amendment to Alcohol Ordinance section 6-1-Unanimously approved without comment.

A motion was made and seconded to go into Executive Session, but the vote not yet occurred when City Attorney Brad Folsom noted that City Administrator Jack Byrd had suggested that Mr. Tillman make his presentation on behalf of Remerton Mills, LLC in open, rather than executive session.

So, at minute 8:30 there was another presentation by Mr. Tillman on behalf of the old Strickland Cotton Mill owners, Remerton Mills, LLC.

The big news was that the property purchased about four and a half years ago for $1.5 million and on the current tax rolls with a value of just under $1.6 million has just recently been appraised at $4.4 million,  according to Mr. Tillman.

One would think that some farsighted deep pocket investors would be ready to jump on this opportunity... some investor other than the City of Remerton.

This was the topic of discussion for the executive session that followed.

EXECUTIVE SESSION:  Property - There was no discussion or comment when Council went back into public session, just a motion to adjourn.
