Water upgrade to cause lane closures on Baytree Rd, Tues-Thurs
Saturday, 14 November 2009

Utility construction in the next week on Baytree Road, west of Gordon Street, is expected to create a few inconveniences for motorists traveling this area; but in the long run, the completed work will allow the City of Valdosta to provide water to the City of Remerton before the holiday season.

The City of Valdosta Engineering Department has worked closely with the City of Remerton and their contractor to minimize the impact on the Remerton community by scheduling the project before the holiday season and the expected increase in traffic it brings. Work will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17 and is expected to continue around the clock through early Thursday, Nov. 19.

During construction, traffic on Baytree Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction, between Gordon Street and the railroad track. Left turns in both directions in this area of Baytree Road will also be prohibited. Engineers will observe traffic patterns at the intersection throughout the construction period and adjust the timing plan for the area signals, giving priority to the traffic flow on Baytree Road.

Adequate signage will be installed at six advance locations to warn motorists to expect congestion on Baytree Road and Gordon Street. However, motorists are advised to use caution when driving in this area and seek alternate routes, if possible.

For more information, call City of Valdosta Engineer Von Shipman at (229) 259-3530.

From the GBI website:

Monday, October 26, 2009  Contact: SAC Russell Mansfield - 912-389-4103; Cook County Sheriff John Daughtrey - 229-896-7471

Adel, Georgia, - On Monday, October 26, 2009, a Valdosta man was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Cook County Sheriff's Deputies after he arrived at the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in Adel, Ga. Joseph Edwin Cornelius III, 28, was charged by the GBI with 3 felony counts of Computer Forgery. Cornelius had been hired as a consultant by Probate Court Judge Chase Daughtrey to help with the transition of court procedures and new accounting methods after Judge Daughtrey took office in January 2009.

The GBI office in Douglas was contacted by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the month and requested to assist in the investigation of missing deposits from the Cook County Probate Court.  Probate Court Judge Daughtrey had contacted the Sheriff’s department after several daily deposits from the Probate Court had not been deposited in their account. All of the deposits, which included cash and checks in excess of $16,000.00, have been recovered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Cook Sheriff's Office and the GBI. If anyone has information pertaining to the investigation, please contact the Cook County S.O. at 229-896-7471 or the GBI Douglas Office at 912-389-4103.

Mr. Cornelius III was the other finalist for Remerton;s City Administrator position.  Congratulations to the City Council on making the right choice with Mr. J. D. Byrd.
